Contamination within single-stream recycling causes recycling plants to operate inefficiently. Specifically, high levels of contamination cause recyclable materials to be sent to landfills, as automated sorting systems implemented at recycling plants cannot keep up with high volumes of contamination and end up mistakenly sorting recyclable materials along with contaminants. Given that implementing a solution at the plant level will most likely be unfeasible, we have been looking into developing a solution that will reduce single stream contamination at the consumer level. We have recently been exploring the development of an image recognition system that could be implemented at consumer-level recycling bins in order to pre-sort recyclable materials, thereby helping to mitigate the problem of recyclable materials mistakenly being sent to landfills.
