When disaster occur, people need to evacuate to shelters. For people with special needs such as sleep apnea, diabetes, asthma, and more, this can be difficult because not all shelters can accommodate them. By creating a website where people can sign up for and add their special needs there, we can help them find shelters that will support their special needs when disaster happens.

Before Disaster Database, there were only a few ways people to find out whether their special needs could be accommodated for. Organizations such as the Red Cross did not provide information about what special accommodations a shelter could provide, only what shelters were open, which led to these people not evacuating because their special needs were not being met.
